Decimal (SI) vs Binary (IEC)

1 KB = 1,000 B (decimal)
1 KiB = 1,024 B (binary)
1 MB = 1,000 KB (decimal)
1 MiB = 1,024 KiB (binary)
1 GB = 1,000 MB (decimal)
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB (binary)
1 TB = 1,000 GB (decimal)
1 TiB = 1,024 GiB (binary)

What is Data Size Conversion?

Data size conversion allows you to convert between different units of digital information. There are two systems: decimal (SI) units use powers of 1,000, while binary (IEC) units use powers of 1,024.

This tool features:

  • Ten data units — Bits, bytes, KB, KiB, MB, MiB, GB, GiB, TB, and TiB.
  • Instant conversion — Results update in real-time as you type.
  • Binary vs Decimal — Clear distinction between SI and IEC standards.
  • Bidirectional — Enter any value and all others update automatically.

How to Use

  1. Enter a data size — Type a value in any of the ten data size fields.
  2. View converted values — All other fields update automatically with the converted values.
  3. Check the reference — The reference section shows the difference between decimal and binary units.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) uses the decimal system where 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) uses the binary system where 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Binary units are more common in computing.

How many bytes are in a gigabyte?

In the decimal system, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes. In the binary system, 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Why do hard drives use decimal units?

Manufacturers use decimal units because the numbers appear larger. A "1 TB" drive contains 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is about 931 GiB.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes. All processing happens entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server.
