This calculator estimates the time required to transfer a file over a network based on file size and connection speed. It supports both bit-based and byte-based units for file size (B, KB, MB, GB, TB, b, Kb, Mb, Gb) and connection speed (bps, Kbps, Mbps, Gbps, Bps, KBps, MBps, GBps).
The calculation accounts for the difference between bits (used for network speeds) and bytes (used for file sizes). Results are shown in multiple time formats for convenience. Use this tool to estimate download times, upload durations, or network backup windows.
A byte (B) is 8 bits (b). Network speeds are typically measured in bits per second (Mbps, Gbps), while file sizes are measured in bytes (MB, GB). This calculator automatically converts between them. For example, 100 Mbps = 12.5 MBps (100 ÷ 8).
Real-world transfer times are affected by network overhead, latency, packet loss, congestion, and protocol overhead (TCP/IP headers, retransmissions). The calculated time assumes ideal conditions with full bandwidth utilization. Expect actual times to be 10-30% higher in practice.
Internet plans are usually advertised in Mbps (megabits per second). If you know your speed in MB/s (megabytes per second), use MBps. For local network transfers (Wi-Fi, Ethernet), use Gbps or Mbps. The calculator supports all common units.
