What is a Random Word Generator?

A random word generator is a tool that selects words at random from a built-in dictionary of common English words. Instead of picking words by hand, you set a few filters and the tool returns a fresh set of words joined one per line. It is handy for brainstorming, creative writing prompts, classroom exercises, vocabulary practice, and generating placeholder text or test data.

The built-in word list contains roughly two thousand common English words. You can narrow the pool by minimum length and maximum length, and optionally restrict results to words that start with a specific letter or short prefix. The number of words to generate can be set from 1 up to 500 in a single run.

Randomness is produced with a Fisher–Yates shuffle of the filtered pool, and the first N words are returned. Because each word in the pool appears only once, a single generation never repeats a word. If you request more words than the filtered pool contains, the tool simply returns the entire pool and reports how many matched.

Everything runs locally in your browser. No words, filters, or results are sent anywhere, and you can copy the list to the clipboard or download it as a plain text file named random-words.txt.

Key Concepts

  • Built-in dictionary — roughly two thousand common English words.
  • Length filter — minimum and maximum word length, capped at 20 characters.
  • Starting-letter filter — restrict words to a one- or two-character prefix.
  • Word count — generate between 1 and 500 words per click.
  • Fisher–Yates shuffle — selects words without duplicates in one run.
  • Runs 100% in your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to Use Random Word Generator

  1. Set the word count — Choose how many words to generate, from 1 to 500.
  2. Filter by length — Set the minimum and maximum length; the maximum is capped at 20 characters and the values swap automatically if the minimum is larger.
  3. Add a starting letter — Optionally enter one or two characters so only words beginning with that prefix are used.
  4. Generate — Click Generate to shuffle the matching pool and display the words, one per line.
  5. Copy or download — Use the copy button or Download .txt to save the list as random-words.txt.

Worked Examples

  • Default settings — 10 words, minimum length 3, maximum length 8, repeated on every click with a different order.
  • Prefix filter — with “Starts With” set to s and lengths 4 to 6, every result is a 4–6 letter word beginning with the letter s.
  • Fewer matches than requested — requesting 500 words when only 120 match returns all 120 and shows “120 words generated (from 120 matching)”.
  • Reversed length range — entering min 12 and max 5 swaps the values to an effective range of 5–12.
  • Length above the cap — entering a max length of 25 is clamped to 20, so no word exceeds 20 characters.
  • No matches — a prefix such as zz produces “No words match your filters” and reports 0 generated.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • The maximum length is capped at 20 — any higher value you type is clamped, so very long words will never appear.
  • Minimum and maximum can be swapped — if the minimum is larger than the maximum, the tool swaps them for you.
  • The prefix accepts only two characters — the “Starts With” field ignores anything longer.
  • No duplicates in one run — a single generation never repeats a word, but a new click reshuffles everything.
  • Handle the no-match case — if you see the “No words match” message, widen the length range or clear the prefix.
  • Nothing leaves your browser — results are safe to copy or download as random-words.txt.

Common Use Cases

Frequently Asked Questions

How many words are in the dictionary?

The built-in list contains roughly two thousand common English words, covering everyday nouns, verbs, adjectives, and more.

Can I generate more than 500 words at a time?

No. The count is limited to 500 per run. If the filtered pool is smaller than 500, you receive every matching word instead.

Does the tool ever repeat a word?

No. Within a single generation each word appears only once because the pool is shuffled and the first N unique words are returned.

What does the Starts With filter do?

It keeps only words that begin with the one- or two-character prefix you enter, which is useful for alliteration or letter-themed activities.

Why did I receive fewer words than I asked for?

You requested more words than the filtered pool contained, so the tool returned the whole pool and reported the matching total in the info line.

Is this tool free?

Yes. It is completely free and all processing, copying, and downloading happens locally in your browser.

Is any data uploaded to a server?

No. Generation runs entirely on your device, so nothing is transmitted or stored.

How do I save the generated words?

Use the copy button to copy the list to your clipboard, or click Download .txt to save it as a file named random-words.txt.
