A timezone converter is a tool that translates a specific date and time from one timezone to another. The world is divided into 24 main time zones, each centered around a UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) offset, plus a few half-hour and quarter-hour offsets (e.g., India at UTC+05:30, Nepal at UTC+05:45).
Timezones are identified by IANA names (such as Asia/Jakarta or America/New_York) rather than numeric offsets, because most regions observe Daylight Saving Time (DST) and shift their offset seasonally. The IANA database keeps track of these transitions and historical changes automatically.
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard the world uses to regulate clocks. It is not adjusted for daylight saving time, so it stays constant year-round. Timezone offsets are expressed as a positive or negative shift from UTC (e.g., UTC+07:00, UTC-05:00).
IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) maintains the tz database — a standard list of timezone identifiers like Asia/Jakarta, Europe/London, and America/Los_Angeles. These names encode both the region and a representative city, and they automatically handle DST and historical offset changes.
DST is the practice of moving clocks forward by one hour during warmer months so that evenings have more daylight. Not all countries observe DST, and the start and end dates vary. This converter computes the correct offset for the selected date so DST transitions are handled automatically.
If a city observes DST, its UTC offset shifts by one hour twice a year (in spring and autumn). For example, New York is UTC-05:00 during standard time (EST) and UTC-04:00 during daylight saving time (EDT).
No. All conversions run in your browser using the built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API. No timezone data is uploaded, and no analytics are collected.
